How is MAT useful?
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) helps reduce relapse rates for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) by combining FDA-approved medications with behavioral therapies. These medications are tailored to each person’s needs and support recovery much like treatments for other chronic conditions, such as diabetes. MAT is an evidence-based approach endorsed by leading health organizations, including SAMHSA, the CDC, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the American Medical Association. It is not a substitution of one substance for another, but a medically supported path toward lasting recovery.
- EBlock the euphoric effects of the opioids
- ERelieve cravings
- ENormalize brain chemistry
- EAllow the individual to complete daily tasks without the concern of withdrawal
Current FDA-approved MAT medications include:
- EMethadone
- EBuprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex, Zubzolv, Bunavil, Sublocade, Probuphine)
- ENaltrexone (Vivitrol)
Addiction and Chronic Illness: A Medical Comparison
Substance use disorder, much like diabetes, involves genetic, behavioral, and lifestyle factors. Both require structured treatment, lifestyle changes, and medical support to achieve lasting stability. Understanding this connection helps us view recovery through a compassionate, evidence-based lens.

- Lifestyle choices affect development
- Severity varies
- Diagnosed through clear criteria
- Lifelong condition once diagnosed
- Lifestyle changes are primary treatment
